Edit before you send it: add one specific example for each area, with a date or a number. That's what makes a review useful, and it's what reviewers remember.

Turn the draft into a review worth reading

The generator gives you clean, specific sentences. These five edits make the review yours.

  1. Add one example to each area

A date, a number or a project name. "Clear communicator" is forgettable. "Her launch notes cut support tickets in half" isn't.

  2. Cut anything that isn't quite true

If a sentence is close but not right, rewrite it or delete it. The person reading it will notice.

  3. Lead with what matters most

Put the area that shaped the year first, whether it's the biggest strength or the thing that has to change.

  4. Make the goals concrete

Each goal needs a what and a by-when. Two or three is plenty.

  5. Read it out loud

If you wouldn't say it to the person in a one-on-one, it doesn't belong in the review.

Writing your own self-evaluation?

Switch the generator to "Me (self-evaluation)" and the phrases change to first person. Then:

  • Own your results. Say "I led" and "I delivered", with the numbers.
  • Name one growth area with a plan. It reads as self-aware, not weak.
  • Connect your work to what your boss cares about. Revenue, quality, customers, the team.

For full examples by role and rating, see self-evaluation examples.

Phrases by skill

Every phrase in the generator comes from these pages, with more options at each rating, sample paragraphs and goals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the performance review generator free?

Is it AI-generated?

No. It assembles phrases from our library, written for each skill and rating. For help with a specific person or a rating you're unsure about, text Lauren.

Can I use it for a self-evaluation?

Yes. Choose "Me (self-evaluation)" and the phrases switch to first person.

What should a performance review include?

For each area: a rating, a specific example and what to do next. Then two or three goals for the next period. See complete performance review examples.
